[Maps of Lansing, Michigan].

Series 12-14 of record group 59-4 consist of three maps of the Lansing, Michigan area, originally collected by either the Michigan Geological Survey or the Michigan Lands Division. The first map is a map of Lansing, Board of State Auditors subdivision of block 115 (July 15, 1882), C.R. Dart, surveyor (size 16 1/2" x 22 3/4", scale 80 ft. : 1 in.). The second map shows the Lansing State Bldg. land and public squares, churches, bridges, schools, lot numbers (ca. 1880), including areas bounded by Saginaw, Sycamore, East and South Streets (2 pieces, 25" x 18", 25" x 18 5/8"). The final map is a cadastral map of Lansing, subdivision of block 115 (E 1/2) (ca. 1880, 15" x 17").

The Michigan Geological Survey was created by Public Act 20 of 1837. Its purpose was to conduct a geological and mineralogical survey of the state. The state legislature appointed Douglass Houghton the first state geologist (1837). In 1921, the state legislature established the Department of Conservation, and the Michigan Geological Survey became part of that department (Public Act 17 of 1921).
